Practice cartoon faces (Pencil)

This is another great book, "Fun with Pencil" by Andrew Loomis
I want to learn the Loomis method of people drawing so in this book he starts by drawing cartoons.

I'm posting these lessons on my blog because I tend to lose sketchbooks.

practice pencil sketches 12/9/16

I was trying to put in the big shape but it seems to work better if I start from an eye and work my way out.

9x12 Pencil view from New Berlin Library upstairs window

I always start light with pencil because you can't go back and make it lighter so the darks were still light when I stopped.
Always fun to sketch with my buddies.
It was 30F and overcast so we decided to sketch indoors.

3x5 pencil sketches in quattro book 11/6/16 - 11/10/16

I like the paper in this book but I wish they would lay flat so probably won't buy again. However the size fits in my pocket quite well.
Trying to draw dailyish to improve my drawing skills.
BIC Mechanical Pencil #2 0.7mm which I like because it doesn't need to be sharpened.
Cat Scan waiting room.

Whitnal Park 6x8 acrylic 11/4/16

After listening to Eric Rhodes Podcast with James Gurney  I decided to go back to using 4 tubes, a white, yellow, red, and blue. It's a challenge that he and his friends do with each other. He also sets up orange cones when he paints plein air that say "Department of Art".

This time I used white, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and really concentrated on values. I still need to put on a light gray wash/glaze to tone down the trees in the background. I was still working on the foreground when it was time to leave but I think it works OK. In the previous outdoor painting adventures I had been trying to exactly match the fall colors by trying different reds and yellows. However I think this experiment worked very well.

My friends told me about
  • Savy Painter
  • Wind River Art for Easy L plastic grids?
I put these two books on my amazon wish list or at least I'd like to read them after listening to Eric Rhodes podcast with James Gurney
  • Sketching from Nature in Water Colours by Aaron Penley
  • The Artist's Guide to Sketching by James Gurney, Thomas Kinkade

pencil sketches

Here's some pencil sketches with cheap mechanical pencil.

Some cartoons while we were sitting around up north. The guy on the left really liked his picture. He was fun to draw. People never really sit still so you have to be quick.

We were waiting to go get ice cream so I started drawing the right hand side of the clothesline. We left before I could draw the clothesline and clothes on the left. It was fun drawing the rope.

While husband was pumping gas I quick started drawing a tree after I washed the windshield. I've been reading a lot of books about the Canadian artist Emily Carr and it was interesting to see how she drew/painted vegetation, etc.

Talking on the phone. Somewhat out of  proportion.

Thermos of hot water and instant coffee jar that husband put on the table while he was getting ready for work. I got pretty much drawn before he moved it.

Estacion 7/12/16 8x6 acrylic

Just catching up on posting.
This was a fun day. Talked with Butch the Barber in the red caboose again this year and got to meet one of the owners of Estacion. All in all a beautiful, sunny day of painting.
